'Together' Anijam

The summer before we officially launched Kino Bino we came across the Anijam 48 hour Animation Challenge! and figured why not? So we teamed up with our local animation buddies, Oz Durose and Mair Perkins to enter. Our local cinema, and the home of our studio, Phoenix Leicester, was hosting the Leicester Anijam event, so it was a perfect opportunity to get creative and do something a little fun.

The theme was Together. We could create anything we liked around this theme and had to include a piece of sound design the organisers provided.

Each year WONKY partners with Encounters Film Festival to bring you the AniJam Challenge, a 48hr creative animation mission. The AniJam challenge is simple. Create an animated film based around a specific theme in 48hrs.

HOW WE MADE AN ANIMATION IN 48 HOURS, TOGETHER!

We settled into the Kino Bino studio space and got brainstorming - post-it’s were everywhere, with all of us pitching in ideas before we settled on the tale of a Zombie and his hand.

After a quick break, we went straight into pre-production. Oz was on script and storyboarding, while the rest of us started creating character artwork, backgrounds and props. Mair whipped up an amazing little rig for our Zombie and a special one just for the hand. By the second afternoon we had polished the artwork off and got stuck into animating. We stayed in the studio all night, working through the film shot by shot. Doing the sound design at 3am and polishing the animation into next day - just in time to hit the deadline. After 48 crazy hours, minimal sleep and full of snacks we pulled this film together.

It was showcased on the Anijam website alongside many other wonderful animations created by teams all over the UK. It was also screened at Manchester Animation Festival and locally at The Short Cinema: Leicester’s International Film Festival. We even got some shout outs on some local blogs. (Midlands Movies, The Mancunion)

It was an amazing and exhausting experience, but it was great to be able to collaborate with fellow animators and artists to create something we all could be proud of.
